My Tour of Strange, Southern Strip Malls Continues
Monday, June 15, 2009 at 10:54PM I thought Opulent Cakes of Hurst, Texas was odd. It has nothing on this store opening soon in Oakdale, Georgia.

Ironically, it will be taking over the space previously occupied by Rico's Chipped Beef Despair. I like to think that Rita named her store knowing she had made a horrible mistake, and the name was chosen in hopes of making her feel better about herself every single morning. Let's face it, no child has ever said to themselves, "Someday, I will own an ice custard store, and it will be magical. Nope, no ice cream for me! Instead, I will choose ice cream's ugly sister, because I want to go into business with a hard ceiling on my possibilities for success." When you open an ice custard store, you have to look back and know that at some point along the way you made a wrong turn. Thus, you comfort yourself by believing that you don't sell a slimy abomination of ice cream's ideal, but that instead you deal in happiness.
God speed, Rita. And may you one day find the peace that your professional life will never, ever afford you.
